Teosehdotus, Lappeenranta, 2018
Tunnustuspalkinto

Palkintolautakunta kirjoittaa:
"Ehdotus on hauskasti rakennusten toimintaa kommentoiva teos, jossa on kekseliäs yhteys maakuntalinnun kautta Lappeenrantaan. A4 koon käyttö byrokratian symbolina ja tuulessa hajoava järjestys ilmentävät hienovaraisesti järjestyksen ja vapauden suhdetta. Paperista taiteltu lintu korostaa tätä asetelmaa. Teos kertoo paikasta ja arjesta hienostuneella tavalla ja vastustaa monumentaalisuutta."

Teos koostuu 100-150 kiiltäväksi hiotusta teräksisestä levystä muodostaen ison pääryhmän ja kaksi pienempää ryhmää kilpailualueelle. Teoksen osat kiinnitetään virastotalon, kaupungintalon ja poliisilaitoksen julkisivuihin.

Lähtökohtana teokselle on yhtäältä virastoissa pyöritelty paperi teoksen muuntuvana visuaalisena materiaalina ja toisaalta Etelä-Karjalan maakuntalintu satakieli, Luscinia luscinia, joita voi bongata origameina pöllähtävien papereiden seasta. Hallintorakennusten ikkunoista leviävät paperiarkit karkaavat tuulen tempaamina koko Villimiehenkadun alueelle. Näennäinen keveys on kuitenkin hämäävää. Hallintorakennuksissa päätetään monia ihmisiä koskevista asioista, johon liittyvät olennaisesti paperit, informaatio, valta, vastuu ja vapaus.

The Jury states (free translation):

"The entry comments wittily the function of the state and city agencies in the area. The proposal creates an imaginative link to Lappeenranta through the illustration of the regional bird Thrush Nightingale. The application of the size A4 as a symbol of bureaucracy and the wind blown papers embody delicately the relation between the order and the freedom. The bird folded out of paper emphasizes this layout. The work of art relates elegantly to the scene and everyday life, thus contesting monumentalism."

The entry consists of 100-150 lustrous steel plates and seven steel birds. Comprising the main composition and the two smaller compositions the entry spreads to the competition area. Each of the compositions is attached to the exterior walls of the state and the city agencies i.e. the Police Department, the City Hall and the State Office building.

The proposal constitutes on the one hand on papers rotated in the different agencies and on the other hand on a regional bird Thrush Nightingale, Luscinia luscinia. In the piece the core material, papers, undergoes a visual transformation to origami birds that you can twitch amongst the wind blown papers. The sheets of papers spreading from the Lappeenranta government agencies are flowing away by the blowing wind covering the entire Villimies Street (Villimiehenkatu) area. The apparent lightness is however delusive. Many important decisions concerning lots of people are taking place inside the walls of these particular agencies. The decision-making is essentially related to papers and information and constitutively to power, responsibility, liberty and freedom.
